چکیده

Previous long-wavelength analyses of capillary breakup of a viscous fluid thread in a perfectly inviscid environment show that the asymptotic self-similar regime immediately prior to breakup is given by a balance between surface tension, inertia, and extensional viscous stresses in the thread. In contrast, it is shown here that if viscosity in the external fluid, however small, is included then the asymptotic balance is between surface tension and viscous stresses in the two fluids while inertia is negligible. Scaling estimates for this new balance suggest that both axial and radial scales decrease linearly with time to breakup, so that the aspect ratio remains O(1) with time but scales with viscosity ratio like (m int /mext) 1/2 for m int@mext , where m int and mext are the internal and external viscosities. Numerical solutions to the full Stokes equations for m int5mext confirm the scalings with time and give self-similar behavior near pinching. However, the self-similar pinching region is embedded in a logarithmically large axial advection driven by the increasing range of scales intermediate between that of the pinching region and that of the macroscopic drop. The interfacial shape in the intermediate region is conical with angles of about 6° on one side and 78° on the other. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~98!01711-5#

Capillary threads and viscous droplets in square microchannels

We experimentally study the formation and evolution of threads containing more viscous liquids surrounded by less viscous, immiscible liquids through hydrodynamic focusing in square microchannels. Over a large range of viscosities and interfacial tensions, five characteristic regimes of flow behavior are identified: threading, jetting, dripping, tubing, and displacement. We locate the boundarie...

Influence of insoluble surfactant on the deformation and breakup of a bubble or thread in a viscous fluid

The influence of surfactant on the breakup of a prestretched bubble in a quiescent viscous surrounding is studied by a combination of direct numerical simulation and the solution of a long-wave asymptotic model. The direct numerical simulations describe the evolution toward breakup of an inviscid bubble, while the effects of small but non-zero interior viscosity are readily included in the long...

Influence of surfactant solubility on the deformation and breakup of a bubble or capillary jet in a viscous fluid

In a previous study M. Hameed et al., J. Fluid Mech. 594, 307 2008 the authors investigated the influence of insoluble surfactant on the evolution of a stretched, inviscid bubble surrounded by a viscous fluid via direct numerical simulation of the Navier–Stokes equations, and showed that the presence of surfactant can cause the bubble to contract and form a quasisteady slender thread connecting...

Viscous Potential Flow Analysis of Capillary Instability

Capillary instability of a viscous fluid cylinder of diameter D surrounded by another fluid is determined by a Reynolds number J = V D `= `, a viscosity ratio m = a= ` and a density ratio ` = a= `. Here V = = ` is the capillary collapse velocity based on the more viscous liquid which may be inside or outside the fluid cylinder. Results of linearized analysis based on potential flow of a viscous...

How to Extract the Newtonian Viscosity from Capillary Breakup Measurements In a Filament Rheometer

The liquid filament microrheometer originally described by Bazilevsky et al. (1990) provides a simple way of extracting material parameters for Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids from measurements of the capillary breakup of a thin fluid thread. However, there is an unresolved discrepancy in the value of the Newtonian viscosity obtained from the experimental data when using the existing theoreti...
